Dia De Muertos

We are celebrating Halloween this week but it is also time to think about Dia de Muertos, celebrated in Mexico and around the world.

Here is the link to the origins and meaning of this Mexican holiday dating to the pre-Columbian era.
skulls and pearls....

It is a day on which friends and family who have passed are remembered and visits from their souls encouraged....

at the flea

I don't really hit the flea markets in NYC much anymore so I was happy to stumble upon rows of vendors on Lincoln Road this past Sunday morning.

I loved the booths full of vintage jewelry, posters, furniture, fashion, footwear, bags and more.

Even though the browsing took place in high heat, it all looked too good to pass by without taking a peek.

Here, it was not the items in the stall but the seller's own white eyelet blouse that the shopper inquired about.

"You know, it is one of those things from Paris," the vendor shared in a strong French accent. " You know, one of those things from one of those boutiques you always go to..."

And the negotiations began!

Burma Bag

While in Miami this weekend, I stepped off the beach to have lunch in the shade of the garden patio at The Raleigh.

I was admiring the lush setting when a richly hued tote on the love seat opposite me caught my eye.

A while later, Cat from the Babalu lobby pop up shop joined me for a moment to have a quick coffee and also gasped at the beauty of the bag.

She did not hesitate to ask the reserved owner to tell us about it. Upon being questioned, the guest broke into a gentle smile and told us it was an item that always attracted attention.

We learned that she bought it and several others while in Myanmar.

It is known as a 'Burma Bag,' woven from recycled packing tape straps and used by local women to carry up to 50 lbs of market produce and wares.

"It is amazing how much the women can carry in these bags!" she shared.

The owner hailed from Venice and wore a simple chambray blue shirt dress, flat sandals and fabulous Prada shades.

She agreed to an official photo shoot of her bag before exiting the patio to catch the afternoon sun!

(HEYYYY) my kind of store

Last week, I checked out the new Band of Outsiders flagship at #70 Wooster Street in SOHO.

It is the first US store for the L.A. based brand founded in 2004 by designer Scott Sternberg.

It is a large, open, feel good space full of the great fashion that has won it acclaimed cult following status.

(heyyy) there is a heart at the front door!

blink blink! the embroidered 'eyelash' sweater that i have been eyeing online...

a shopping bag that says what it has to say...

rewards and incentives?  after you shop, you can line up to buy a cookie at the milk bar window!

brand recognition? i was stopped on the street later in the day by a young woman who recognized the sticker on the Kraft paper in my shopping bag! we had a whole conversation about it while waiting at a crosswalk...

And to think it all started with a line of men's shirts and ties made from vintage fabrics!

Here's Wendell

Until today, I have never encountered the New York fashion designer Wendell Headley but I am pretty certain as I passed a strikingly costumed man while walking down West 39th Street that here was Wendell.

He was in the midst of explaining to another gentleman why he was dressed as he was.  "It's what I do," he stated.

in the garment district,  west 39th street

I only know of Wendell through Sugar Hill Culture Club's Felicia Gordon, who collaborated with him on a book entitled Where's Wendell?

A chance encounter with Wendell as a child led to her friendship with him later on in life and to Felicia's own impulse to create a photographic body of work around his story of artistic expression.

See and learn more on Felicia's site, http://www.shicnyc.com.

Have a beauty filled Wednesday!
