on the Cape
Happy Father's Day, Dad!
My favorite family memories have always been of summer vacations on Cape Cod.
Sandcastles in the sun on Harding Beach, or at Nauset or Marconi; library cards for rainy days; hotdogs from The Beachcomber; fried clams; lobsters; berry pies from Marion's; bumper cars; soft ice cream; penny candy; fudge; and the magical Ben Franklin store on Main Street in Chatham, where Grandma would give us each spending money to select a toy as souvenir.... dressing up for brunch at Chatham Bars Inn or dinner at Thompsons or The Wequassett... evening concerts at the Bandstand; and those long beach walks to the lighthouse, sometimes while flying kites or hunting for horseshoe crabs, everyone in cozy sweatshirts or windbreakers, smelling of salt and suntan lotion, with all the time in the world to reach our destination and just as much time to make our way back to beach blanket base camp with our trove of seashells, seaweed, and smoothly polished stones.
Are we there yet?
Lots of love always! xoxo

boy meets girl
Dear Dad,
I am so glad things did not work out with that Smith or Holyoke girl you dated before meeting our Mary through Christy and John Rinehart in the spring of '57!
Happy Father's Day! Thank you for your grace, elegance, intelligence, humor, style and hard work!
Sunday allowance was always something I loved about you, too....
xx
