Labor Day love

Surely a summer highlight was attending the opening night for artist and friend Gabrielle Lundy whose textile collage was shown at Chelsea's Viridian Artists juried exhibition in mid-July.  She flew in from Seattle to participate in the show upon learning her work had been included.

Changing Hands, Stitching Stories is crafted from multiple up-cycled fabrics collected by the artist and mounted on an old picket fence.

Gay has been creating textile collage and mixed media assemblage for over three decades now in spite of being diagnosed with severe rheumatoid arthritis.

A self-taught contemporary maker who has lived all over the world, she celebrates everyday materials through exuberant color and design.

Labor Day love goes to this true labor of love!

RAMONA in the HOUSE

"Knitting is the new yoga," fashion obsessed designer Lau Almeida says of RAMONA HOUSE classes initiated as an expansion of the knitwear brand she founded in 2009.  Over 50 women come each week from her native Montevideo to participate in the sessions, not just for the meditative benefits of knitting but also to relax, find a warm, welcoming place and share a cup of sweet tea...

RAMONA is named after Lau's grandmother, from whom Lau inherited her childhood hobby as the starting off point for her design career and mission.

Lau's vision is expansive, embracing both ancient techniques and contemporary lifestyle. "Each piece is carefully crafted from soft Merino wool or from cotton...  An estimated 20 to 45 hours of handmade work is required to create each piece, all made with love by Uruguayan artisans."

Lau shares: "It is fundamental to support Fair Trade, and to be conscious about social, economic and environmental wellbeing.  It is from happy sheep and weavers that work comfortably at home, that unique and fashionable clothes come... "

journeys with jess brown

What a happy surprise to find jess brown and friends at Playtime New York show today!

A pigeon with pom presided over the mini atelier which included paper dolls, Parisian plumed flappers, ballerinas, beauties with cross body bags, a few fur collars for a quick change, one fine brown burro and the softest, rainbow woven doll pillow and throw for the weariest of our intrepid travelers ...

Not to worry,  jess's latest book collaborations were there, too, and a linen covered coloring book for those long summer road trips...

Sweet travels! Sweet dreams!

frida and fresh coconut

i am always grateful for a new taste temptation, especially a chocolate one.

the local and exotic market inspiration behind each handmade truffle at roni-sue's is reason enough to sample all the flavors.

i started with Frida, followed by fresh coconut and passion and was offered a perfect chocolate rose.

it was only after i had left to walk up Forsyth street in search of cw pencil enterprise that i realized i had to backtrack a few blocks to find my intended destination.

mistakes in new york can be serendipitous, not to mention delicious.

a return visit is in order to try the caramel corn and buttercrunch or to enjoy a "make and take" class on the premises.
