marc my words,

you will be hearing lots about Jess Brown.

from her Fall Fashion Week 'debut' with Bottega Veneta (see September post on this blog), to her February feature in Martha Stewart Living, to the launch of her womens and home design collections  'bits & pieces'  in March, to a soon to be aired Today Show story, Jess is having a moment, or two or three.....

along with the haute hullabaloo also come the overwhelming ooh la la's surrounding the charming book Kiki & Coco in Paris,  launched in late 2011.

it does not take a bite into a madeleine for me to recall the precious party with Jess held in Washington, DC in October but how fun to have her right here on NYC turf for a day!

just a hop and a skip from the Christopher Street subway stop and a walk over to Little Marc Jacobs last Thursday and there they were, "les collaboratrices":  photographer Stephanie Rausser; 'star' of the story Kiki; co-star of the story, the one of a kind doll Coco;  Jess Brown herself; and author/publisher Nina Gruener, lined up in a neat row behind a child's height table, looking like school girls, or dare i say, much like dolls...

super chouette! Vogue Bambini blogger and California groupies were in attendance, too! and quite the doll entourage in prime window seat locations!

yet another benchmark, a book signing at little marc....

from left to right, nina, kiki, stephanie, coco, and jess!

star power....
no who's who, this doll holds her own!

stephanie signs a book for vogue bambini guest...
fashion friends in attendance, all the way from CA!
madeleines, macaroons and perriers, perfect elixirs!

dolls on a window vent, venting about fickle fashion trends and such....

Merci to Little Marc Jacobs...  for gathering the California gang in The Big Apple...  to share un petit morceau de Paris!

only in New York!

the long and the short of it

sun, rain, humidity, wind ..... who can guess these days what each hour will bring weather wise!

some are determined to brave the elements to tell their short story as we slip into summer --

yesterday, i spotted two photo worthy upper west siders wearing long locks and lace with their short shorts...  and flowers and plaid and prints to boot....even on their boots!

short cut to 96th street subway station ...gold locks, lace tights, floral print shorts, sweater, shoulder bag, plaid rain boots

a copy cat at the 98th street copy shop...black locks, lace tights, black shorts, tee, lace print bag, suede ankle boots. thank you for letting me take your photo, satya!

today, we lucked into some real summer weather and with it, a clear shift in the approach to shorts chic:

a mad dash: not the girl in the billboard, i am speaking about the slow and steady great ochre/grey combination with leather belt and cross body bag. the loose wavy hair and clean white flip flops are this urbanite's nod to summer....

head for the cooler ....white is always right, leaving it to lace again but this time with strappy thong sandals and lots of skin to go with the statement tattoo and tote....add a notch to her look for the cinch belt!

did someone say tattoo? one shoulder top with color of the moment coral shorts and sporty two tone flip flops makes the girl on the right alright!

her friend expresses her own point of view, playing perfectly with pastels - baby blue sweater and peach bloomer style banded short shorts with laced Keds in updated anthracite... one wears her hair up,  the other down....you say tomato and i say tomahto....

shall we dance?  near lincoln center, denim shorts, classic navy sweatshirt, laced leather ankle boots and my fave, big hair. an oversized natural leather satchel finishes the look. the yoga mat in pink adds an accessory she clearly takes seriously....

that's it for my shorthand on shorts ! happy weekend !! remember, fashion is love!

why not?

sometimes an image leaves an imprint on me.

approaching cafe como no from the winding bend below its hilly perch

it is Mother's Day weekend and maybe because the city streets today were full of families strolling and sounds of giggling children and flowers flowers everywhere, what is on my mind is the joyful posada i witnessed in Punta Mita, Mexico late last year from the rooftop terrace of Cafe Como No (Cafe Why Not, in English).  my colleague and friend Cynthia took me there for a 'study break' from work one evening just before the sunset over Banderas Bay.  we wandered down the main street on foot past colorful painted restaurant and store fronts just feet from the beach below.

colors, shapes and textures on the varied doors and store fronts

scarlett is an artistic beach boutique with my favorite heart motif. its sister location is in sayulita.

we had to round a bend in the road and climb a small hill to access the cafe, just far enough off the beaten path and just work enough to find to make the ultimate discovery all the more sweet. then, the embrace of the plants and the welcoming iron gate signaled 'home'...

the simple charm of cafe como no

i remember that it was unexpectedly windy on the roof and we moved down to the garden courtyard, but not before the music sounded and the small band of children began their procession down the hill.

the children descend the hill
can you find the burro?

the posada passes by
what could be more innocent than the sight of children participating in a traditional Christmas festival, this the dramatization of the search of Joseph and Mary for lodging.

a quick photo looking out to the bay as dusk comes...

in the lush patio, we are safe from the wind. Cynthia orders the most amazing Pie in the Sky mini molten chocolate cake, a feature on the menu much to my delight. i have passed Pie in the Sky on the ride up to the resort for years now but never sampled the melt in your mouth confections firsthand.
the sweep of sunset through the bouganville; note the monkey...
a young couple joins us on the patio, but otherwise it is just me, Cyn, the monkey, and our sincerely conversational server with whom i managed to communicate almost in mime due to my non existent Spanish.

dusk falls and the lanterns go on

the charming wooden garden gate; there was a fountain, too...

we can hear one of the owners in the open kitchen off the main dining room, clanging pans in preparation for the dinner crowd to come, not too unlike the joyful noise of the children who paraded by...
