Roma's sky Roma's moon

our Roma is not the ROMA in the nuanced Oscar award-winning film but is our Roma in the same awkward, wondrous years of becoming young women, of experiencing love and rejection,  accomplishment and failure,  and sense of belonging and also of being alone.  we were in so many ways the best and the brightest, diverse, accomplished, multi-faceted, even at age 16, 17, 18, and full of fearless ambition, giggling on the Metro North on that train ride to visit the Yale campus, for example. or earning our rankings in senior class 1st, 2nd 3rd, Jennie graciously sharing the top spot with number 2, she and Roma standing side by side for the shortest but most memorable speech ever delivered to a graduating class, "Good. Luck," their smiles at the heart of the matter, two unique and pioneering spirits, ever so slightly rebellious in their disruption of both pomp and circumstance, ever so unique in forging their own way and inspiring us all to do the same. i am a day late in remembering our Roma, but we do remember her and carry her in our hearts. Roma's sky, and Roma's moon were with us all day and into the luminous night yesterday, and always! xoxo

on the Cape

Happy Father's Day, Dad!

My favorite family memories have always been of summer vacations on Cape Cod.

Sandcastles in the sun on Harding Beach, or at Nauset or Marconi; library cards for rainy days; hotdogs from The Beachcomber; fried clams; lobsters; berry pies from Marion's; bumper cars; soft ice cream; penny candy; fudge; and the magical Ben Franklin store on Main Street in Chatham, where Grandma would give us each spending money to select a toy as souvenir....  dressing up for brunch at Chatham Bars Inn or dinner at Thompsons or The Wequassett... evening concerts at the Bandstand; and those long beach walks to the lighthouse, sometimes while flying kites or hunting for horseshoe crabs, everyone in cozy sweatshirts or windbreakers, smelling of salt and suntan lotion, with all the time in the world to reach our destination and just as much time to make our way back to beach blanket base camp with our trove of seashells, seaweed, and smoothly polished stones.

Are we there yet?

Lots of love always! xoxo

reflection

i took a long walk this afternoon, down to the tennis courts in the park to see the rose garden a neighbor up the street mentioned she had planted, then along the bike path below the highway, listening on my phone to Al Sharpton deliver the eulogy at the Houston service for George Floyd.

Reverend Al had much to say about 'wickedness in high places' and called for justice. of George Floyd, he reminded all that God chooses ordinary people to do his work. he called him an 'ordinary brother' that 'nobody thought that much about' but that 'God took the rejected stone and made him the cornerstone of a movement that's going to change the whole wide world.'

the sun was bright and hot and the light danced on the water. people, many alone, had found spots in the shade, in the soft grass, under a graceful tree, on a solid rock - seeking moments of calm perhaps, amidst the world's turbulent tides.

THE GATES

remembering Christo and the season in the city with The Gates, photos are randomly selected from many moments scouting photo opps in Central Park....  i would get up early and walk to work a different way each day, and explore the Park top to bottom. i remember meeting visitors from all over the world every day, all happy and chatting with one another and so full of joy at discovering New York City and this installation!  i know that i have some photos taken in the snow, too, but have not found them yet in my quarantine clean up...
