rainbow

these are pictures of the stripes and colors in the rainbow i came upon on my last morning in Waikiki in early December..

calm after a quick morning rain on waikiki beach...
searching for a pot of gold...

lamp post, palm tree, fountain,tourist....

in sharp contrast today, back in New York, i put on black and white polk dot gloves for my morning walk to greet the balmy day;

i walked up to one of my favorite Columbia oriented delis for an egg sandwich and came face to face with a counter full of black and white cookies;

later in the day, while running errands in my neighborhood, i kid you not,  i passed a man walking one black, one white Scottie dog. they were on red leashes....

i passed a chess game being played beneath some blue scaffolding by a book seller's stand.

when i ran back to take a photo, the men had broken down the game for the day and only the empty board remained, the bag of chessmen wrapped in a plastic bag.  it did not make for much of a photo.

not a rainbow exactly, but a black and white in color kind of winter day ....

visions of sugarplums....

The Nutcracker's final curtain at the MET here in New York was on the 31st but if it is visions of sugarplums you are after, you can still barre hop over to the Phillips Collection in D.C. to catch Degas's Dancers at the Barre: Point and Counterpoint.

I twirled through this show in early November on a summer-like morning, mesmerized by the 30 some works assembled from all over the world which together tell the broad story of Degas's fascination with the subject of the ballet dancer and reveal the museum's restored masterpiece, a canvas begun in 1884 and refined and reworked for over two decades by the artist.

A mirrored wall and ballet barre occupy the last room of the exhibit.
A moment for the visitor to imagine herself en pointe, or to pause to practice a deep plie?
